Ten Principles for Christian Editors

Written by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes

My desk and bookcases are laden with Bibles, theological resources, and books on editing and writing. The Copyeditor’s Handbook stays close to my computer as a handy reference.

Christian editors must stay updated on industry standards and maintain a fresh perspective in our walk with Christ. Practical ways to ensure we’re equipped include developing proficiency in understanding biblical context and applying it to our editing decisions. Certain principles and practices should consistently guide our work, regardless of the content we edit.

Here are ten principles every Christian editor should know and incorporate into our work.

1. Respect for Truth

It’s vital to uphold the truth and maintain accuracy in all content. This includes fact-checking and ensuring the information presented aligns with biblical principles.

2. Integrity in Editing

We should strive to maintain integrity in our work, helping our clients avoid plagiarism and upholding ethical standards when making edits.

3. Understanding Christian Values

Editors should possess a profound comprehension of Christian principles and be capable of recognizing and supporting content aligning with these principles. This entails being knowledgeable about the teachings and beliefs of Christianity and being able to discern and promote content that reflects Christian values such as compassion, forgiveness, integrity, and humility. The Christian editor should also be sensitive to the diverse interpretations and expressions of Christian faith and be capable of engaging with a wide range of Christian perspectives in their editing work.

4. Sensitivity to Faith-Based Content

Editors should approach religious topics with respect and understanding.

5. Clarity and Conciseness

We should ensure that the content we edit is clear and concise and effectively communicates God’s message without ambiguity.

6. Graceful Communication

We should communicate gracefully and humbly, even when addressing significant changes or challenges in the content we edit.

7. Discernment in Content Selection

Exercise discernment when selecting content for publication, ensuring that it aligns with biblical principles and contributes positively to the Christian community.

8. Commitment to Excellence

Striving for excellence in editing includes attention to detail, thoroughness, and a commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful content.

9. Collaboration and Accountability

We should be open to collaboration with authors, publishers, and other editors while seeking mentorship and accountability as we grow in our craft.

10. Continuous Growth in Faith and Editing Skills

Editors should prioritize continuous growth in our faith and editing skills. Staying rooted in the Word of God and seeking professional development opportunities will enhance our effectiveness in the field.

Christ-centered editors are essential for upholding the integrity of content to ensure it’s aligned with sound biblical theology. By adhering to these ten principles, editors can enrich content by infusing it with honesty, ensuring that it reflects clarity, purpose, and a profound commitment to Christian values.
