After my last few posts (see links below), I hope you’ve now got your social media platforms up and ready to go! You’ve been posting content regularly that provides some sort of value to your target audience. Now it’s time to start building your online reputation as an expert editor.
First, it helps to know a little about who you are. Are you funny? Encouraging? Serious, but helpful? These will influence the tone of your business personality and help shape how people perceive you. The point is consistency. You don’t want to be Chris Rock one day and then Mr. Rogers the next. No one will take you seriously.
There are many other ways to develop an online reputation, and I’ve listed ten great options below.
- PRAY! Ask God to help you in this endeavor. He’s already led you on this path, He’ll help you take the right steps. Then, be bold! Be courageous! Grab that title of “expert” and make it yours.
- Start a website and get on relevant social media sites. (You should have already done this.)
- Start enlisting allies—people who already know what you can do. Have them help you spread the word. Maybe they can provide avenues to new clients through their connections.
- Develop content showing your knowledge. This one is important because potential clients want to see that you know your business—that they can trust what you say.
- Post on your blog
- Guest post
- Post on social media
- Post testimonies both on your website and your social media platforms.
- Get involved in related communities (like writers groups) both online and in real life.
- Dig in and answer questions.
- Develop a book or course.
- Create videos or public speaking.
- Stay on top of relevant news in the publishing world.
Now, don’t get intimidated. You don’t have to do all of these all the time. Pick out two to three that are doable in your current circumstances, and then build up to the rest. The key to developing a good reputation is to provide value. All the time. Generously. People will take notice, and when they have an issue they’ll start coming to you. You’d better be ready!
