Virtual Christian Editors Conference

Written by Jayna Baas

The world of editing, writing, and publishing changes at a sometimes alarming rate. From the rise of AI to the evolution of independent publishing, new opportunities and challenges require the ability to pivot and embrace change while remembering the timeless fundamentals of good writing.

As you navigate this challenge, the annual PENCON virtual conference for Christian editors is a great way to come together and learn from seasoned industry professionals. Registration is now open for PENCON 2026 (May 6–8). Here are just a few of the topics brought to you by this year’s outstanding faculty:

1. AI and SEO Tools and Optimization

Intimidated by AI? You don’t need to be. Industry expert Thomas Umstattd Jr. brings us two workshops focused on how editors can approach AI in a healthy and helpful way to increase their visibility to potential clients and improve productivity while remaining aware of AI’s limitations and risks.

2. Client Communication and Coaching

Whether it’s assessing a client’s true needs, helping an author overcome writer’s block, developing rich nonfiction content, or explaining nuances of grammar or technology, editors often act as teachers or mentors even if we don’t think we offer coaching services. Choose from multiple workshops equipping you to communicate clearly and effectively to best help your clients succeed

3. Self-care for Editors

It’s easy to focus on helping clients while forgetting to pay attention to our own spiritual, emotional, and physical health. Dr. Sharon Hinton offers two workshops on setting boundaries and rejuvenating yourself so you can give your clients your best.

4. Fiction Fundamentals

If you work with fiction or would like to start, don’t miss this year’s lineup of fiction editing workshops. A range of experienced instructors will take deep dives into the science of good stories, common narrative pitfalls, and strong series development, plus a hands-on look at the entire fiction editing process from developmental editing to copyediting.

5. Business Tips for Freelance Editors

Even though many of us would like to focus on the words-on-the-page part of freelance editing, we all have to face the business side of freelancing as well. Three professional editors and an attorney share advice on fair use law, social media marketing, additional income streams, increased productivity, and more.
